Yeah, I do.
My dad said that to me recently. He posed it as a question, really. He
was frustrated, and trying to talk to me about my job prospects and plans for "figuring things out," as he sometimes puts
it. He asked if I thought I was special - if I thought that the rules that apply to other people don't apply to me.
At the time, and in that conversation, I gave him a sincere (and appropriate)
answer - of course the rules apply to me, too. Everyone has to get a job, and earn money, and support themselves.
But the truth? I do think I'm special. And I think that precisely because
it's what my parents always told me.
Yeah. Exactly because they always told me that I'm not typical, or average,
or "normal," but that I'm special and wonderful and different - and able to do anything in the world I set my mind to - is
why I didn't just take a job at Starbucks or find another one in insurance after months of not making much freelancing. It's
why I stuck it out - and last week, finally got offered a job I couldn't have designed better if I'd been able to create
anything in the world for myself!
Sometimes, you might be the only one who believes you're special . .
. at least for a little while . . . but sometimes, that's all it takes.
